First, an oscillating plate vibrates at tens of thousands of pulses per second, generating ultrasonic waves that transfer from the contact surface to the plastic. This process creates high temperatures at the point of contact, melting the plastic from solid to liquid, similar to other injection molding methods.
As the plastic becomes liquid, pressure is applied to bond the two sections tightly. When the ultrasonic waves cease, the plastic solidifies again, resulting in a single molded piece. This quick and seamless method produces an exceptionally strong seal, commonly used in the automotive industry for molding enclosures and engine components, or when sealing two parts without the drawbacks of fasteners or tapes.
It's important to note that some resins or types of plastic are more suitable for welding than others, and there are limits to the size of joints and the compatibility of different materials. However, once bonded, the molecular structure of the joint is robust and long-lasting.
