Mold Gate Design

One of the smallest features in a mold often has the biggest impact on part quality. 😲

We spend a LOT of time talking about quality, efficiency, and repeatability in injection molding, but one topic consistently proves its importance across projects: gate design. It may be a small feature on the tool, but it has an outsized influence on how a part fills, cools, and ultimately performs in production.

Designing a gate isn't just about choosing a location on a part. It's about shaping the entire flow behavior of the melt long before the first shot is ever taken. The gate determines how the cavity fills, how pressure is distributed, and how the material packs out during the cycle.

When done correctly, gate design can significantly improve weld line strength, reduce sink marks, prevent jetting, and even shorten cycle time. When done poorly, it can introduce defects that follow a program from first sampling all the way into serial production.

We see this repeatedly in practice. A seemingly simple adjustment, moving a gate a few millimeters or switching to a different type, can completely change the outcome in a very positive way. These results aren't guesswork. They come from experience, simulation, and a deep understanding of polymer behavior under real processing conditions. 🙌
